Gloucestershire County Council Invests £6 Million in Smart Technology for Vulnerable Residents
Gloucestershire, UK – In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the safety and independence of vulnerable residents, Gloucestershire County Council has announced a £6 million investment in smart technology-enabled care solutions. This innovative program will introduce a range of devices, including fall detectors, door sensors, and dementia clocks, into the homes of those in need.
Councillor Dr. Kate Usmar, the council’s cabinet member for adults’ safety and independence, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This investment in technology will help people and families get the support they need, peace of mind, and a better quality of life.” The aim is to empower residents to live independently and safely in their own homes for as long as possible, delaying the need for additional care and support.
The technology, provided by Careium, is designed to collect data and analytics about service users, allowing the council to allocate resources more effectively and assist a greater number of individuals. The service will also feature bed or chair occupancy sensors, bogus caller buttons, pressure mats, and wellbeing apps, all accessible through referrals from health or social care practitioners.
Dr. Usmar noted that the initiative not only aims to support residents but also to provide reassurance to families and loved ones. “We hope this service will facilitate quicker and safer returns home after hospital admissions,” she added. The data collected will also play a crucial role in detecting early changes in behavior, allowing for timely interventions.
As part of the transition to digital care solutions, the council plans to upgrade those currently using analogue services to digital equipment ahead of the impending digital switchover deadline in 2027.
This investment marks a significant step forward in the council’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents, ensuring that vulnerable individuals can maintain their independence while receiving the support they need.
