The battle against ‘wokeness’ in the US and Germany – DW – 03/12/2025

Date:

Wokeness, a term that has gained significant attention in recent years, has become a contentious issue in the United States, particularly under the leadership of former President Donald Trump. In his State of the Union address to Congress, Trump vehemently expressed his disdain for wokeness, labeling it as trouble and bad. This sentiment is reflected in his administration’s efforts to eradicate terms associated with wokeness, such as “sexuality,” “transsexual,” “non-binary,” “climate crisis,” and “racism,” from federal documents.

Trump’s stance on wokeness extends beyond mere rhetoric; his government has taken concrete actions to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in federal agencies. Major corporations like Amazon, Google, and Walmart have followed suit, rolling back their own DEI initiatives. Even educational institutions, such as the University of Virginia, have opted to shut down their DEI offices in response to this anti-woke sentiment.

One of the key targets of Trump’s anti-woke crusade is critical race theory (CRT), which posits that systemic racism is ingrained in various social institutions, perpetuating disadvantages for people of color. Trump has mandated that public schools cease teaching CRT and related topics, threatening to withhold federal funding from non-compliant institutions. Several states have already banned CRT, citing concerns that it unfairly vilifies white individuals as oppressors.

Criticism of wokeness is not limited to right-wing factions; psychologists like Esther Bockwyt acknowledge the need for a nuanced perspective on the issue. Bockwyt argues that while awareness of discrimination is crucial, the radicalization of wokeness has led to divisive and harmful outcomes. She highlights contentious debates surrounding gender identity and sports participation as examples of how wokeness can clash with biological realities.

In Germany, wokeness manifests in various forms, including discussions on transgender rights, veganism, climate activism, and gender-sensitive language. Critics often deride these initiatives as intrusive and moralizing, leading to public backlash against perceived attempts to dictate social norms. Politicians like Friedrich Merz have even suggested that gender-sensitive language could bolster support for far-right political parties, further fueling the debate on wokeness.

Books critiquing wokeness as a threat to democracy have gained traction in Germany, with authors like Susanne Schröter warning of ideological extremism and societal division. The portrayal of the “woke left” as a scapegoat for societal ills has resonated with many, sparking debates on the limits of political correctness and cultural tolerance.

Despite Trump’s efforts to combat wokeness through policy measures, the underlying tensions surrounding the issue are unlikely to dissipate anytime soon. As society grapples with the complexities of identity, discrimination, and social justice, finding a balanced and nuanced approach to wokeness remains a pressing challenge. Esther Bockwyt’s call for a rational and differentiated perspective serves as a reminder of the importance of engaging in constructive dialogue and critical reflection on this contentious issue.
