Spring expected to begin with above-average temperatures due to rising temperatures

Date:

As the first day of astronomical spring approaches, the south of the UK is set to experience unseasonably warm temperatures, with highs reaching up to 18C on Thursday. This peak in temperature is significantly higher than the average for this time of year, with the spring equinox bringing a welcome change in weather after a chillier start to the week.

According to BBC Weather, regions such as West Wales, central, and south England are expected to enjoy the best chance of experiencing the highest temperatures on Thursday. However, the extent of the warmth will depend on cloud cover, so some areas may see slightly lower temperatures than others.

In contrast, the north of the UK will also see a rise in temperatures, with Edinburgh expected to reach 10C and Belfast 13C. While not as warm as the southern regions, these temperatures still mark a noticeable shift towards milder weather as spring officially begins.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell commented on the upcoming weather, stating that the spring equinox will coincide with pleasant and spring-like conditions. Despite the warmth, it is unlikely that Thursday will be the hottest day of the year so far, with the record still held by 9 March when Crosby reached 19.7C.

The week leading up to Thursday will start with frosty nights and average daytime temperatures. Monday is forecasted to be fairly cloudy, but the day will gradually become sunnier from the east, leading to a mostly sunny Tuesday. Wednesday will see fine weather in the north, with a chance of showers in the southern half of the UK. Daytime highs will range from the mid-teens in the south to the low teens further north.

As Thursday approaches, any mist and fog are expected to lift, paving the way for another mostly fine day. Warm southerly winds will bring in milder air, resulting in highs in the low to mid-teens in the north and mid-to-high teens in central and southern regions. However, Thursday night may see rain spreading from the south, leading to a slightly cooler and more unsettled day on Friday.

The warm weather on Thursday coincides with the spring equinox, which officially marks the beginning of astronomical spring. This celestial event will occur just after 09:00 on 20 March, ushering in the new season with a burst of warmth and sunshine.

Overall, the upcoming weather promises a delightful start to spring, with temperatures rising above average and sunny skies gracing much of the UK. Whether you’re in the south enjoying the peak warmth or in the north experiencing milder conditions, Thursday’s weather is sure to bring a sense of renewal and anticipation for the season ahead.
