The United States is more foreign than we realized

Date:

The Americanisation of British culture has been a topic of discussion for many years, with concerns ranging from slang to fast food chains. However, in recent times, the focus has shifted towards the Americanisation of British politics. American ideas about race and identity have been integrated into British institutions, causing a clash of ideologies that don’t always align. This has led to questionable policies and decisions, as seen in Liz Truss’s campaign against “occupational licensing” that mirrored American right-wing views but didn’t necessarily address UK-specific issues.

In the past, the prevalence of American popular culture in Britain created a sense of familiarity and connection between the two nations. However, recent events, particularly during Donald Trump’s presidency, have highlighted the stark differences between the US and the UK. The values and attitudes of American right-wing voters have shifted towards ideologies more aligned with countries like Russia and Turkey, rather than the rest of the Western world. This divergence emphasizes the unique nature of American politics and the challenges of trying to emulate or align with it.

Despite the widespread exposure to American pop culture in Britain, many fail to grasp the full extent of the differences between the two countries. Consuming American media or entertainment is not the same as understanding the complexities of American society and politics. The rise of extreme voices in American media, such as conspiracy theorists and divisive figures, showcases a side of America that is often overlooked or misunderstood by British audiences.

As America continues to evolve and diverge from traditional Western values, the idea of it becoming more “European” or aligning with European norms is becoming less likely. The emergence of movements like “wokeness” and “national conservatism” in America further solidifies its unique identity and challenges the notion of a shared destiny with Europe. The differences in religious beliefs, political ideologies, and societal norms between the US and Europe highlight the growing divide between the two continents.

In conclusion, the process of coming to terms with American strangeness is essential for British citizens and policymakers. Understanding the nuances of American culture, politics, and society is crucial in navigating the complexities of international relations and global dynamics. The evolving landscape of American politics and the divergence from Western values underscore the need for a nuanced and informed approach to engaging with the US. By acknowledging and embracing the differences between the UK and the US, both countries can foster a more constructive and mutually beneficial relationship.
