My Genuine Review of the Walking Pad: A Game Changer for My Fitness Journey

The Rise of Walking Pads: A Game-Changer for Home Fitness

If you’re anything like me, you’ll appreciate workout hacks and healthy living tips that are not only effective but also time-efficient. Staying healthy is essential, but so is ensuring you have ample time to relax and unwind. This balance is why I was intrigued when I stumbled upon a walking pad review on my TikTok feed.

With a staggering 5.1 million views on the #walkingtreadmill hashtag at the time of writing, it’s clear that walking pads—often foldable and compact enough to fit in a cupboard or behind your desk—are experiencing a surge in popularity.

Why Consider a Walking Pad?

Many wellness tips and tricks can be time-consuming. While I love staying fit and healthy, it’s just one part of my life. I’m all for fitness equipment and techniques that help me feel my best without consuming hours of my day.

For some, heading to the gym for an hour is feasible, but for many others, it’s not a viable option. Daily walks can also be challenging if you have a newborn or other commitments at home. This is where a walking pad can be a game-changer.

I decided to put a walking pad to the test over nine months. My primary question was whether I would actually use it or if it would become another large piece of gym equipment gathering dust. Spoiler alert: I’m now a convert, and I still love using the walking pad most weeks to help hit my step count.

What is a Walking Pad?

Walking pads, sometimes referred to as walking treadmills, are specifically designed for walking at home. Unlike traditional treadmills, which are bulkier and often meant for running, walking pads are typically smaller and foldable, making them easy to store.

Most walking pads come with a remote control to adjust speed, ranging from a gentle stroll to a brisk walk. They also feature a small screen displaying the total time and steps taken.

Benefits of Using a Walking Pad

In our increasingly sedentary world, especially for those working from home, walking pads offer a practical solution. Research indicates that excessive sitting can lead to various health issues, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

A 2021 review found that using walking treadmills can lower blood pressure and body fat percentage. Moreover, a study published in the British Medical Journal highlighted that sit-stand desks, which a walking pad effectively creates, can significantly reduce sitting time and enhance productivity.

The benefits of walking, as outlined by the NHS, include:

  • Improved energy levels
  • Reduced stress
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Better sleep quality
  • Decreased risk of heart disease, stroke, asthma, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some cancers.

My Experience with the Walking Pad

When my walking pad arrived, the delivery man raised an eyebrow when I explained its purpose. However, setup was a breeze—unpack, unfold, plug in, and I was ready to go.

During the dark winter evenings, I found myself using the pad to get in those last few thousand steps without braving the elements. I could work on finalizing articles while gently walking under my desk.

Initially, I had to figure out how to position my laptop at the right height, but I quickly adapted. I learned that maintaining a slower pace allowed me to walk for longer periods, sometimes up to an hour a day.

The ease of putting the walking pad away was a pleasant surprise. I had been skeptical about investing in a large piece of equipment, but I’ve used it at least twice a week since the New Year, making it a worthwhile purchase.

As summer approached, my usage decreased, but I still appreciated it on particularly sedentary work-from-home days. It’s a unique way to incorporate steady-state cardio into a busy schedule.

On evenings when I was home alone, I often hopped on the pad while watching reruns of Friends or This Is Us. It became a cozy routine—light a candle, wear my favorite jumper, and enjoy a relaxing yet productive evening.

Long-Term Thoughts on the Walking Pad

After nearly two years of using my walking pad, I can confidently say it has changed my life. I still use it regularly, especially during the winter months when outdoor walking is less appealing.

While my usage does fluctuate with the seasons, I appreciate having it available for work-from-home days. I’ve averaged 15,000 steps a day this year compared to 11,000 last year, and I feel fitter and more energetic, largely thanks to the walking pad.

I’m not alone in my enthusiasm. Other staff members at MC UK have also found walking pads beneficial. Executive Beauty Editor Shannon Lawlor shared that, despite not being a fan of traditional exercise, she enjoys walking and finds the walking pad a simple way to stay active while working from home.

Fashion Writer Sofia Piza echoed this sentiment, noting how her walking pad has allowed her to squeeze in extra steps while catching up on her favorite shows and podcasts.
