GreenPan Cookware Review: A Decade of Testing and Trust

This GreenPan cookware review has been a long time in the making. With over a decade of testing, I’ve cooked everything from delicate eggs to gooey mac ‘n’ cheese in these cookware pieces. As a pro-trained chef and self-proclaimed clean cookware nerd, you can trust my insights.

A Short History of GreenPan

GreenPan was launched in 2007 by school friends Jan Helskens and Wim De Veirman. At that time, Teflon was the leading nonstick cookware, but it came with a significant downside: toxic synthetic chemicals in its PTFE coating. Helskens and De Veirman aimed to create a non-toxic alternative, leading to the development of Thermolon™. GreenPan became the first brand to introduce a non-toxic, nonstick coating free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as "forever chemicals."

Is GreenPan Cookware Safe?

Safety is paramount when it comes to cookware, and GreenPan checks all the boxes. Their nonstick coatings are free from PFAS chemicals like PTFE, PFOA, and GenX, as well as heavy metals like lead and cadmium. This means you can enjoy high-performance cooking without the health concerns associated with traditional nonstick surfaces.

Third-Party Certifications

GreenPan is a pioneer in the industry, holding the world’s first NSF® certified ceramic nonstick and recently earning the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification for responsible aluminum sourcing and production.

“We’ve created nine generations of Thermolon, each a culmination of years of study and experience. We hold over 150 patents for technological advancements designed to make cooking easier and better for everyone.”
— Madison Oakley from the GreenPan Team

The Health Risks of Traditional Nonstick Cookware

Understanding the benefits of non-toxic cookware requires recognizing the pitfalls of traditional nonstick options. When heated above 500°F, PTFE can decompose and emit toxic particles and gases, which can lead to serious health issues. PFAS chemicals bioaccumulate in the body, potentially causing a range of health problems, including metabolic issues, decreased fertility, and increased cancer risks.

GreenPan’s rigorous testing ensures their PFAS-free cookware performs safely, even at high temperatures.

Misleading PFOA-Free Labels

Many brands tout their PFOA-free status, but this label can be misleading. PFOA was phased out in 2005, so it’s not a significant achievement. GreenPan, however, is entirely free from all PFAS chemicals, ensuring you won’t have to worry about toxic fumes.

After 10+ Years of Rigorous Testing, GreenPan Still Comes Out on Top

As the founder of Organic Authority and a culinary school graduate, I’ve tested numerous GreenPan cookware sets, including the Valencia Pro, Reserve Pro, Spectra Collection, and the Stanley Tucci Collection. My experience spans everything from daily eggs to complex sauces, making me well-qualified to share a thorough review.
