Ball State’s Financial Wellness Department Launches Program to Help Students Understand Financial Concepts

Ball State University’s Financial Wellness Department is making strides in helping students better understand financial concepts through their new program. The program offers services such as budget planning assistance and financial strategies for larger purchases like apartments or cars.

Assistant Director of Financial Wellness and Account Management, Evan Richter, initiated the program over two years ago with the goal of equipping Ball State students with the necessary financial skills for life after graduation. The program now boasts two accredited financial counselors and two certified financial peer mentors.

All services and resources provided by the program are free to students, making it an invaluable resource on campus. Richter emphasized the importance of financial literacy as a lifelong skill and highlighted the benefits of the program’s unbiased and free services.

The department also offers personality testing to gain insight into a student’s history with money management. This personalized approach allows financial counselors to better understand and assist students in managing their finances effectively.

With a report from the National Library of Medicine revealing high levels of financial distress among college students, Richter believes that the stigma around discussing money may contribute to these issues. The financial wellness program aims to change this narrative by providing a safe space for students to seek help and guidance.

Financial peer mentors, like third-year business administration student Eva Bott, offer students a relatable and comfortable avenue to discuss their financial concerns. The department will be hosting “Cardinal Financial Wellness Week” to further promote financial literacy through events and workshops.

To book an appointment with the Financial Wellness Department, students can contact them via email, phone, online form, or visit their office in Lucina Hall. The program’s dedication to empowering students with financial knowledge and skills is a commendable effort towards ensuring their success both during and after their time at Ball State University.
