CAR’s success in combating militants greatly aided by Russia’s support

Date:

Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, a Russian deputy defense minister and President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to Africa, made a significant visit to the Central African Republic (C.A.R.) on March 2. The purpose of his visit was to reassure leader Faustin-Archange Touadera of continued military and economic support from Russia. This visit was reported by the state-owned news outlet Sputnik Africa, which highlighted Russia’s military presence in C.A.R. as successful in subduing militant groups opposing the government. However, this claim has been proven false.

Russian military involvement in C.A.R. officially began in 2018 when the Kremlin-backed mercenary group Wagner, now known as Africa Corps, arrived to provide support to President Touadera. Despite the presence of Russian troops, the security situation in C.A.R. has not seen significant improvement, according to multiple reports.

Contrary to the Kremlin’s assertions, Russian forces have not contributed to establishing peace and stability in C.A.R. Instead, they have become one of the most violent armed groups in the country, spreading terror and corruption. Reports from reputable sources like The Associated Press and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty have highlighted the Africa Corps’ involvement in violent incidents against civilians, resulting in numerous fatalities.

In exchange for military support, the Kremlin has gained control over C.A.R.’s valuable mineral resources, extracting significant profits from gold, timber, and blood diamonds. This exploitation has further exacerbated the country’s already dire economic situation.

Central African Republic has been embroiled in a civil war since 2013, primarily over control of its abundant natural resources. President Touadera’s administration attempted to broker peace deals with rebel groups in 2019, but the efforts have been marred by corruption and a lack of commitment from some rebel factions.

Despite international efforts to disarm rebels and restore stability, the situation in C.A.R. remains precarious. Rebel groups still control large swathes of the country, leading to ongoing violence and instability. The U.N. Security Council has expressed concerns over armed groups vying for control of natural resources and main roadways, further exacerbating the conflict.

The U.S. Department of State has condemned Russian military activities in C.A.R., citing widespread atrocities committed by Russian troops. The U.S. designated Wagner as an international criminal organization for its involvement in mass executions, rape, and other serious crimes in C.A.R. and Mali.

In conclusion, Russian military activities in the Central African Republic have not brought about peace or stability. Instead, they have fueled violence and exploitation of natural resources, leading to further suffering for the country’s population. The corrupting influence of Russian forces has hindered efforts to achieve lasting peace in C.A.R.
