### The Need for Connection in a Divided World
In today’s post-pandemic digital age, feelings of isolation have become increasingly common. The political climate, marked by division and discord, has left many yearning for a sense of belonging. In this unique moment in human history, there is a quiet craving for intimate, meaningful gatherings—spaces that remind us we are not alone.
### Luli Creative House: A Home for Community
Enter Luli Creative House, a rentable creative studio and event space located at the intersection of 19th and Howard streets. Opened in October 2022, Luli was envisioned as a sanctuary where individuals can come together, share experiences, and feel uplifted. Owner Ariel Panowicz designed the space to evoke a sense of home, utilizing warmth, color, and genuine human interaction to create an inviting atmosphere.
“People more than ever need a space where they feel safe and welcomed and where they know they will be celebrated just as they are,” Panowicz explains. This philosophy not only shapes the ambiance of Luli but also informs its programming and events.
### The Magic of Storytelling
Inspired by NPR’s “The Moth,” Panowicz initiated a storytelling series called **String Light Stories**. This series aims to capture the magic of storytelling in cozy, intentional settings—much like friends gathered around a campfire or relaxing on a porch adorned with twinkling lights.
“Storytelling is this ancient tradition,” she notes. “Ultimately, it’s just a way that helps us feel connected as human beings.” The series aims to foster shared experiences that bridge gaps and create connections among participants.
### Collaborating for Impact
To bring String Light Stories to life, Panowicz partnered with Agribella Orbis, a local nonprofit co-led by Beaufield Berry and Christi Leupold. Their mission is to empower individuals through storytelling, making them essential collaborators in this initiative. While Panowicz manages the venue and logistics, Orbis focuses on curating speakers and providing coaching.
Berry acts as a supportive storytelling coach, guiding speakers through the process, while Leupold coordinates the schedule and logistics. This collaborative effort ensures that each event is thoughtfully crafted and impactful.
### Themes of Connection and Empowerment
The 2024 season of String Light Stories featured four events, each centered around themes like “Sink or Swim,” “Voices of Pride,” “Motherhood,” and “From Diwali to Dreidels.” Each storyteller shares a narrative lasting five to eight minutes, often enhanced by music or props for a more immersive experience.
This year, the series introduced a hotline for individuals to share their stories, allowing the team to curate themes based on the submissions. The aim is to create a safe space for storytelling, encouraging participation from diverse voices.
### A Transformative Experience
Each storyteller receives personalized coaching from Berry, who helps them refine their narratives and prepares them for the stage. “It’s a holistic process that gets them from a place of ‘Can I?’ and ‘Is it important?’ and empowers them through to the stage,” she explains. This transformative journey fosters courage and vulnerability, allowing storytellers to connect deeply with their audience.
Heather Tedesco, a past panelist from the “Motherhood” event, shared her experience of stepping outside her comfort zone. Despite her initial nerves, she felt honored to participate and grateful for the connections made during the event.
### The Power of Vulnerability
Berry emphasizes that storytelling is an act of bravery. “It empowers the audience to do the same and lessens shame,” she says. The audience often approaches the team afterward, expressing a desire to participate in future events, highlighting the impact of shared narratives.
The series aims to include a wide range of voices, focusing on identity, culture, and lived experiences. Berry notes the importance of diversity in storytelling, ensuring that every event showcases a spectrum of perspectives.
### Encouraging Participation
Individuals with stories to share, even if they are not fully developed, are encouraged to call the hotline at 402-881-0643. Submissions remain confidential unless selected for sharing, creating a safe space for all.
Berry reflects on the magic of each event, stating, “When people have a safe space to be their authentic selves, magical things happen.” This sentiment underscores the essence of String Light Stories—a platform for connection, understanding, and empathy.
### Upcoming Events
The next String Light Stories event, titled “Our Journeys,” is scheduled for June 13 from 7-9 p.m. at Luli. Five storytellers will share their experiences related to overcoming adversity, immigration, illness, and more. Tickets are priced at $20, with proceeds supporting the series and various charitable causes. Tickets can be purchased through Luli’s social media pages or Humanitix.
