### Celebrating Contributions: The Federal Asian-Pacific American Council’s Military Meritorious Service Award

On June 2, during the Defense Department’s Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month luncheon, nine servicemembers were honored with the Federal Asian-Pacific American Council’s Military Meritorious Service Award. This event marked the 19th year of recognizing military personnel for their outstanding contributions to the Asian-Pacific American community.

### Purpose of the Ceremony

John M. Molino, the acting deputy undersecretary of defense for equal opportunity, addressed an audience of approximately 800 attendees, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the diverse backgrounds that make up the fabric of America. He stated, “Events like the one we are having here today recognize that our country is made up almost entirely of descendants from immigrants of many nations.” This sentiment underscores the significance of the awards in promoting awareness and appreciation of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

### Honoring Individual Achievements

The FAPAC Military Meritorious Service Award acknowledges servicemembers who have made significant contributions to advancing Asian and Pacific Americans and promoting equal opportunity within the federal workforce. The keynote speaker, David S.C. Chu, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, assisted in presenting the awards, highlighting the exemplary achievements of each recipient.

#### Marine Corps Honorees

**Staff Sgt. Jonathan E. Flick** was recognized for enlisting over 90 Asian-Pacific islanders during his three years as a recruiter in the Asian Pacific Region. His efforts extended beyond recruitment; he fostered relationships with local communities in South Korea, Japan, and the Marianas Islands, promoting military benefits and opportunities.

**Sgt. Jeffrey Chao**, the Marine Corps Reserve honoree, is celebrated for his activism and community engagement. A veteran of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Chao has been a vocal advocate for veterans’ educational benefits and has actively participated in local events to promote military awareness.

#### Army Award Recipients

**Sgt. 1st Class Thomas A. Talf**, the Army award recipient, has made significant strides in increasing diversity awareness at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His 240 hours of instruction on diversity reached over 233,000 military personnel, and he has been instrumental in organizing large-scale events celebrating Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

**Sgt. 1st Class Kathryn G. Balvage** of the Army Reserve exemplifies leadership within her unit, focusing on training and mentoring soldiers from diverse backgrounds. Her commitment to family readiness and community support has made a lasting impact.

#### Navy and Coast Guard Contributions

**Petty Officer Joseph B. Abenojar**, the Navy’s award recipient, has been a positive influence aboard the USS Carl Vinson, promoting equal opportunity and cultural awareness through various celebrations, including a banquet honoring Asian Pacific American heritage.

**Lt. j.g. Ron Nakamoto** of the Coast Guard has dedicated his efforts to recruiting Asians and advocating for equal opportunities within the military. His involvement in various organizations highlights his commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.

#### Air Force and Air National Guard Achievements

**Master Sgt. Maria R. Kraft**, the Air Force award winner, has worked tirelessly to eliminate barriers to equal opportunity for Asian-Pacific Americans. Her leadership in organizing cultural events has fostered unity and awareness within her community.

**Tech. Sgt. Christian T. Dao**, representing the Air National Guard, has demonstrated innovation and technical expertise throughout his 22-year career. His involvement in community outreach programs showcases his dedication to promoting the National Guard and supporting local youth.
