Gurgaon, India – A torrential downpour on Monday evening wreaked havoc across Gurgaon, leaving thousands of commuters stranded in nightmarish traffic conditions. The heavy rainfall led to severe waterlogging, particularly on the Gurgaon–Delhi Jaipur Expressway, which became a scene of gridlock as vehicles were immobilized for hours.
A viral video shared on social media platform X captured the chaos, showcasing a seemingly endless line of cars, their headlights illuminating the night like a river of red and white lights. Journalist Leena Dhankhar, who posted the video, lamented, “Gurgaon–Delhi Jaipur Expressway turns into a #nightmare. Gridlock stretches for hours, #commuters stuck for over 6 hours, many sleeping in offices. Is this going to be a repeat of #Gurujam?”
In response to the deluge, Gurgaon authorities have issued advisories for schools and corporate offices, recommending that operations shift online on Tuesday. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) reported that over 100 mm of rain fell between 3 PM and 7 PM, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for continued heavy rainfall.
The advisory stated, “In view of the above forecast, all corporate offices and private institutions in the district are advised to guide their employees to work from home; and all schools in the district are advised to conduct online classes on September 2.”
The impact of the rain extended beyond Gurgaon, affecting the entire National Capital Region (NCR). Many areas in Delhi experienced similar conditions, with waterlogged streets and disruptions to the Delhi Metro service. The Yamuna River also continued to flow above the danger mark at Loha Pul, raising concerns among local authorities.
As the city grapples with the aftermath of the storm, residents are left to wonder if this will become a recurring issue, with the hashtag #Gurujam trending as a reminder of the challenges posed by heavy rains in the region.
