Iranian chess referee Shohreh Bayat worries about being shunned due to her activism as she confronts the Russian head of FIDE, the game’s governing body.

Three years after escaping Iran, chess referee Shohreh Bayat is concerned about facing further isolation for challenging the game’s governing body and its president, who is a former Russian deputy prime minister, over her attire at a tournament in October.

“I was initially trying to support Iranian women. I think that’s important and it’s very nice to see other people are supporting me for doing the right thing,” she said.
