Japan Pledges $11.3 Million Grant Aid to Laos for Infrastructure Development
VIENTIANE – The government of Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Laos with a generous financial aid package of 1.707 billion yen (US$11.3 million) for development activities. The grant aid project, titled “Economic and Social Development Programme,” aims to finance bridge rehabilitation and repair work in Laos, which has been severely affected by natural disasters.
The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the grant will provide materials and heavy machinery to assist in the repair of bridges damaged by landslides, storms, and floods. This support comes at a crucial time as Laos continues to face challenges from frequent natural disasters that have hindered socio-economic development and connectivity within the country.
The signing ceremony for the Exchange of Notes concerning the grant took place at the ministry, with Lao Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Phongsavanh Sisoulath and Japanese Ambassador to Laos Koizumi Tsutomu in attendance. Mr. Phongsavanh expressed his gratitude for Japan’s continuous support in infrastructure development, highlighting the importance of improving connectivity to enhance regional and international trade.
The grant aid project will not only contribute to the repair of damaged bridges but also support the upgrade of national highways to facilitate travel, freight transport, and tourism services with neighboring countries. Mr. Phongsavanh emphasized the significance of infrastructure development in transforming Laos from a landlocked country into a land-linked nation, ultimately improving the living conditions of people in remote areas.
