Marietta College Team Makes History in National Accounting Challenge
Marietta, OH — In a groundbreaking achievement, Marietta College has sent its first-ever team of accounting students to the national finals of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) Government Finance Case Challenge. Seniors Gabe Tingle and Hayden Wiggers have earned a coveted finalist spot, showcasing their analytical prowess and dedication to public finance.
The AGA competition invites students from across the nation to delve into the financial data of a real U.S. city, crafting a Citizen-Centric Report. This public-facing document is designed to transparently communicate a community’s financial performance, services, and outcomes. The entries are rigorously evaluated by a panel of accounting professionals, focusing on clarity, accuracy, and public transparency.
Tingle and Wiggers stood out with their comprehensive analysis of Roanoke, Virginia’s financial data. Judges commended their strong visual presentation, clear narrative, and concise delivery of key findings, which ultimately secured them a place among the few undergraduate finalists nationwide.
As they prepare for the final phase of the competition, which includes a recorded presentation, the anticipation builds. The national winners will be announced on December 12, 2025.
Assistant Professor Doug Ankrom praised both of Marietta’s competing teams for their exemplary representation of the college. He emphasized the importance of hands-on learning in the college’s Accounting Capstone course, which equips students with real-world experience and prepares them for the challenges of the accounting profession.
“Our accounting program is about gaining hands-on, real-world experience,” Ankrom stated. “The AGA competition affords our students the opportunity to utilize all the skills gained during their academic journey.”
The capstone course, ACCT 460, introduces students to current issues in accounting and prepares them for business simulations included in the Uniform CPA Examination, focusing on collaborative research and practical application.
This achievement not only highlights the strength of Marietta College’s experiential learning approach but also showcases the professionalism and preparation of its students on a national stage. As Tingle and Wiggers gear up for the finals, the entire college community stands behind them, eager to see how they will represent Marietta in this prestigious competition.
