Opinion: The Lasting Impact of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Compared to Skyrim

The Legacy of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Ask most gamers who were around during the Xbox 360 era, and aside from the infamous Red Ring of Death, they will likely share a treasure trove of fond memories. One title that stands out in this nostalgic landscape is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. As someone who worked at Official Xbox Magazine during its release, I can attest to the profound impact this game had on Xbox 360 owners, including myself.

A Journey Begins

Oblivion was initially slated to be a day-one launch title for the Xbox 360, and the anticipation surrounding its release was palpable. Leading up to the launch, we produced multiple cover stories, and the stunning screenshots captivated everyone. I eagerly volunteered for every trip to Bethesda’s headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, where the magic was happening.

When it came time to review Oblivion, I jumped at the chance. I spent four glorious days in a conference room at Bethesda, immersing myself in the expansive world of Cyrodiil. Clocking in 44 hours before even boarding my flight home, I penned a glowing review, awarding the game a 9.5 out of 10. The experience was nothing short of incredible, filled with gripping quests like the Dark Brotherhood and delightful surprises that made the world feel alive.

The Allure of Cyrodiil

After my initial playthrough on a debug kit, I dove back into Oblivion with the retail version, racking up another 130 hours without hesitation. The game was a marvel, offering a vast, open-world experience that felt revolutionary at the time. For many younger gamers who grew up on Skyrim, the recent release of Oblivion Remastered marks their first encounter with a mainline Elder Scrolls title since Skyrim debuted over 13 years ago.

While I envy this new generation, I can’t help but wonder if Oblivion will resonate with them in the same way it did for me back in March 2006. The game, now two decades old, may not have the same visual impact as it did during its original release. However, Bethesda’s decision to remaster it rather than wait for its 20th anniversary shows a commitment to keeping the legacy alive.

A Technological Leap

Oblivion was a game that defined a generation, taking full advantage of HD televisions and setting a new standard for open-world gaming. It was a stark contrast to the interlaced 640×480 resolution that gamers had been accustomed to. The leap from Morrowind to Oblivion was monumental, and it’s a shift that may never be replicated again.

While the remaster looks better than the original, it doesn’t quite stand out in the same way as it did back then. Modern gaming has evolved, and titles like Fallout 3, Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield have built upon the foundations laid by Oblivion. This evolution means that younger gamers may not experience the same sense of wonder that we did when Oblivion first graced our screens.

Navigating the World of Oblivion

For those diving into Oblivion for the first time, I have a piece of advice: either rush through the main quest or save it until you’ve explored every side quest and activity. The Oblivion gates will start to spawn randomly once you embark on the main questline, and sealing them off early can enhance your experience.

The game’s world is rich with lore, quests, and surprises, making it easy to lose yourself for hours on end. The thrill of discovering hidden treasures and engaging in unexpected encounters is what makes Oblivion a timeless classic.

A Timeless Classic

While the remaster may not evoke the same feelings for younger players as it did for those of us who experienced it during its original release, Oblivion remains a beloved entry in the Elder Scrolls series. Its fully realized medieval fantasy world, filled with adventures and surprises, continues to captivate players, both new and old.

As we eagerly await The Elder Scrolls VI, revisiting Oblivion in its remastered form is a delightful opportunity to relive the magic of a game that changed the landscape of open-world gaming forever. Whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned veteran, Oblivion offers a journey worth taking.
