Celebrating Heritage Through Dance: Palestinian Groups Perform in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — This weekend, Cleveland State University became a vibrant hub of cultural expression as two Palestinian dance groups showcased their heritage through the traditional dance known as Dabke. The event, organized by the Cleveland Palestine Advocacy Community and the U.S. Palestine Community Network, drew dozens of attendees eager to experience the rich tapestry of Palestinian culture.

The Significance of Dabke

Dabke, a folkloric dance deeply rooted in Palestinian history, serves as a powerful symbol of connection to the land and community. Shereen Naser, a member of the dance troupe from Birzeit in the West Bank, emphasized the importance of this tradition. “It’s a connection to land that’s been around for centuries, and we still carry it with us today,” she explained. The dance is not only performed at weddings but also at protests, embodying resilience and unity among Palestinians.

A Global Journey

Voltaire Kharoufeh, who leads the Wishah and Baladi dance troupes, shared that these groups have performed globally for over 34 years. Despite the challenges posed by current visa restrictions, Kharoufeh expressed pride in the cultural unity that the dance fosters among Palestinians, regardless of their religious backgrounds. “We unite Palestinian people of Christian and Muslim faith,” he noted, highlighting the inclusive nature of their performances.

Visa Challenges and Cultural Expression

While the dance troupes typically consist of around 30 members, only eight dancers were able to enter the U.S. for this event due to stringent visa regulations. Kharoufeh lamented the missed opportunities for many who could not join, attributing the difficulties to heightened restrictions implemented during the Trump administration. These restrictions have made it increasingly challenging for Palestinians to obtain travel documents for various purposes, including cultural exchange.

Humanitarian Concerns

The impact of visa restrictions extends beyond cultural events. Naser pointed out the dire consequences for Palestinian children in need of medical treatment. “These children have lost limbs because of buildings falling on them or being shot by Israeli soldiers,” she said. The suspension of a program that allowed injured Palestinian children to receive lifesaving medical care in the U.S. has further compounded the humanitarian crisis.

Broader Implications

Loay Odeh, a member of the U.S. Palestine Community Network, highlighted that the visa ban affects not only individuals from Gaza but also prominent Palestinian figures. He mentioned Mahmoud Abbas, the president of Palestine, who was unable to secure a visa to attend a United Nations meeting. This situation underscores the broader challenges faced by the Palestinian community as they strive for recognition and liberation.

A Moment of Joy Amidst Struggles

Despite the ongoing struggles, the event at Cleveland State University aimed to provide a moment of joy and cultural celebration. Odeh expressed the need for such gatherings, stating, “Every once in a while, we need to be happy, to be joined with our culture.” Naser echoed this sentiment, hoping that attendees, especially those unfamiliar with Palestinian culture, would leave with a deeper understanding of their traditions. “I hope they see our joy, our culture, our traditions,” she said, urging people to recognize Palestinians as more than just victims of conflict.

As the dancers took the stage, the audience was invited to witness not just a performance, but a celebration of resilience, heritage, and the enduring spirit of a community striving for recognition and peace.
