RCB Faces Backlash After Insensitive Post Amid Tragedy

Bengaluru, India — The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) found themselves in hot water on Wednesday after posting a celebratory video of their team bus being welcomed by fans, just hours after a tragic stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and injured many others. The tweet, captioned “This welcome is what pure love looks like,” was met with immediate backlash for its perceived insensitivity, leading RCB to delete the post shortly thereafter.

Official Statement of Grief

In light of the tragedy, RCB issued a statement expressing their sorrow. "We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon," the statement read. "The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us. RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extends our heartfelt condolences to the affected families."

Prime Minister Modi and Local Leaders Respond

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling the incident “absolutely heartrending.” He extended his thoughts to the families of the deceased and wished for a speedy recovery for the injured. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also shared his grief, stating, “The tragedy and death have brought deep pain and shock. Let there be pride, but not bigger than life. I appeal to everyone to please stay safe.”

Chaos Before the Tragedy

The stampede occurred as thousands of RCB supporters gathered outside the stadium to celebrate the team’s historic first IPL title win. The event, intended to honor RCB’s victory over Punjab Kings, quickly turned chaotic as the massive crowd overwhelmed the venue, leading to a deadly stampede at multiple entry points. Earlier visuals showed fans climbing walls and fences in a desperate attempt to enter the stadium.

As the community mourns, RCB’s misstep serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between celebration and safety in high-stakes environments.
