Rubio declares South Africa’s ambassador to the US ‘persona non grata’ in the country

Date:

In a surprising move, Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, Ebrahim Rasool, “persona non grata.” This decision came after Rubio accused Rasool of being a “race-baiting politician” who harbors animosity towards President Donald Trump. The exact reasons behind this expulsion remain unclear, but it appears to be linked to comments made by Rasool during a webinar where he discussed the Trump administration’s actions in the context of shifting demographics in the United States.

Rasool, a former anti-apartheid activist who served time in prison for his activism, has a history of advocating for equality and justice. His recent remarks during the webinar touched on the Trump administration’s policies on diversity, equity programs, and immigration. He highlighted the demographic changes in the U.S., noting that the white population is projected to become a minority in the near future. Rasool also criticized Elon Musk, a prominent figure in both South Africa and the U.S., for aligning himself with far-right groups in Europe.

The expulsion of a foreign ambassador is a rare occurrence, especially between countries with diplomatic ties. In this case, the decision seems to be part of a broader conflict between the Trump administration and the South African government. Trump recently signed an executive order cutting aid to South Africa over a new land law that he claims discriminates against white Afrikaners. The South African government has denied these allegations, stating that the law aims to address the injustices of the apartheid era by redistributing unused land.

Elon Musk, who has been vocal about his concerns regarding the treatment of white Afrikaners in South Africa, has also criticized the government’s business decisions. In a social media post, Musk claimed that the government refused to do business with his company, Starlink, because of his race. These tensions between the U.S., South Africa, and influential figures like Musk have escalated, leading to the expulsion of Ambassador Rasool.

The ousting of Rasool marks a significant development in the diplomatic relations between the U.S. and South Africa. It underscores the complexities of international politics, racial dynamics, and the influence of powerful individuals in shaping foreign policy decisions. As the situation continues to unfold, it raises questions about the future of U.S.-South Africa relations and the role of race in global politics.
