In recent news, one of Nigeria’s most senior politicians, Godswill Akpabio, has found himself embroiled in a controversy surrounding allegations of sexual harassment. The accusations were brought against him by fellow senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who claimed that Akpabio had made inappropriate advances towards her during a visit to his residence in southern Akwa Ibom state on December 8, 2023.
During a session on Wednesday, Senate President Akpabio vehemently denied the allegations, stating that he had been raised well by his late mother and had never harassed any woman. He emphasized his respect for women and even mentioned being awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.
Senator Uduaghan detailed her allegations, stating that Akpabio had taken her by the hand, led her around his house, and made sexual advances towards her while her husband was present. She further claimed that Akpabio had insinuated that she should “take care of him” if she wanted her motions to receive favorable consideration in the senate. These accusations have sparked a heated debate in Nigeria, with many calling for an independent investigation into the matter.
The issue gained further traction when two groups of protesters gathered at the assembly ground in Abuja, with one group supporting Akpabio and the other backing Senator Uduaghan, chanting “Akpabio must go.” Senator Uduaghan used Wednesday’s plenary session to formally submit a petition calling for an investigation into Akpabio’s behavior.
As the president, Akpabio allowed Uduaghan to proceed, directing her petition to the senate committee on the code of conduct, ethics, and public petitions for further review. Before assuming his role as senate president, Akpabio served as the governor of Akwa Ibom state for eight years and also held the position of minister of Niger Delta affairs under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The allegations against Akpabio have raised serious concerns within the Nigerian political landscape, with calls for transparency and accountability in addressing such sensitive issues. The outcome of the investigation will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for both Akpabio and the broader political climate in Nigeria.
