The Last of Us: The Complete Second Season (4K Ultra HD Steelbook)
Official Synopsis
Five years after their harrowing journey across a post-pandemic America, Ellie and Joel have found a semblance of peace in Jackson, Wyoming. However, when a violent event shatters their tranquility, Ellie embarks on a relentless quest for justice, confronting the emotional and physical toll of her actions.
The Movie
Season Two of The Last of Us is a triumph, possibly even surpassing its predecessor. The emotional core is driven by the estrangement between Joel and Ellie, which adds depth to their characters. The second episode stands out as a highlight, showcasing some of the best television I’ve seen in years. The balance of action, plot, and character development is masterfully executed, and Isabela Merced’s addition as Dina enriches the narrative. While I wished for more episodes, the quality of storytelling leaves me eagerly anticipating Season Three.
The 4K Video/Audio
The 4K Ultra HD presentation is nothing short of spectacular. The visuals are cinematic, with impeccable image resolution and vibrant colors that pop against the show’s often monochromatic palette. The surround sound immerses viewers in the world of The Last of Us, enhancing both atmospheric moments and intense action sequences.
Bonus Features
- Exclusive featurettes on character journeys and visual effects
- Behind-the-scenes tours and Q&As with the cast
- Seven making-of featurettes, one for each episode
Materialists (Blu-ray)
Official Synopsis
In this sharp, modern romance, a young New York City matchmaker (Dakota Johnson) finds herself torn between her perfect match (Pedro Pascal) and her imperfect ex (Chris Evans). Directed by Celine Song, Materialists explores the complexities of modern dating.
The Movie
Materialists is a unique blend of drama and comedy, defying traditional genre classifications. It tackles the question of whether to marry for love or financial stability, reflecting contemporary societal dilemmas. While the performances are strong, the film doesn’t quite reach the heights of a classic rom-com. It’s thought-provoking and worth a watch, though I found myself wishing for a more straightforward romantic narrative.
Bonus Features
- Audio commentary with Celine Song
- Behind-the-scenes insights into modern dating
- Collectible postcards featuring behind-the-scenes photography
Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires (4K Ultra HD + Digital)
Official Synopsis
In a bold reimagining of the Batman legend set in the Aztec empire, a young boy avenges his father’s murder by Spanish conquistadors, training under the bat god Tzinacan.
The Movie
Aztec Batman is an intriguing addition to the DC Comics universe, exploring a unique “Elseworlds” scenario. While it’s visually appealing and offers a fresh take on familiar characters, it doesn’t quite elevate itself beyond being a good animated film. However, fans of Batman will likely appreciate this creative endeavor.
The 4K Video/Audio
The 4K presentation is vibrant, with deep blacks and sharp clarity. The surround sound enhances the viewing experience, making it a solid addition to any collection.
Bonus Features
- Insights into the Aztec mythology and Batman’s inspiration
Watson: Season One (DVD)
Official Synopsis
Watson follows Dr. John Watson as he transitions from crime-solving to tackling medical mysteries, six months after Sherlock Holmes’ death.
The Show
While the premise is intriguing, Watson often feels like a standard medical procedural, borrowing heavily from shows like House, M.D. Morris Chestnut delivers a commendable performance, but the show lacks the mystery elements I hoped for. It’s enjoyable enough, but may not captivate those seeking a deeper narrative.
Bonus Features
- Behind-the-scenes looks at the making of the show
- Deleted scenes and a gag reel
Peking Opera Blues (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray)
Official Synopsis
Set in 1920s China, Peking Opera Blues intertwines the lives of three women and two men amidst political chaos, as they navigate love, ambition, and survival.
The Movie
This genre-blending film from Tsui Hark is a delightful mix of action, comedy, and drama. While the plot can be overwhelming at times, the action sequences are exceptional. The 4K release does justice to this visually ambitious film, making it a must-watch for fans of Hong Kong cinema.
The 4K Video/Audio
The transfer offers bright colors and good contrasts, although the audio may not be as clear as desired. Nonetheless, it’s a solid presentation for a classic film.
Bonus Features
- Interviews with key figures involved in the film’s production
- Archival materials and trailers
Ghost Killer (Blu-ray)
