The tremor struck at 10:18 AM IST, originating at a depth of 80 kilometers, with its epicenter located at latitude 23.06 N and longitude 94.51 E.
In a post on social media platform X, the NCS confirmed the details of the quake, which follows a similar seismic event just days earlier. On December 5, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake was recorded, raising alarms about the region’s seismic activity.
Shallow earthquakes, like the one experienced today, pose a greater risk due to their proximity to the surface, leading to stronger ground shaking and potential damage to infrastructure. Myanmar, situated at the intersection of four tectonic plates—the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates—faces significant seismic hazards.
