Tragedy Strikes Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Protest Turns Deadly Amid Rising Tensions

Peshawar, Jul 27 (PTI) — A peaceful protest in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy on Sunday when unknown gunmen opened fire on demonstrators, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and leaving several others injured. The protest was sparked by a recent mortar strike that claimed the life of a young girl in the Zakha Khel area, igniting outrage among local residents.

The demonstration, which took place in the Tirah Valley, saw locals placing the girl’s body in front of the Momand Ghuz security checkpoint as a poignant symbol of their grief and anger. Suhail Afridi, special assistant to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, confirmed that the attack was carried out by terrorists affiliated with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), referred to in local parlance as Fitna-al-Khawarij.

Witnesses reported that the protest was peaceful until gunfire erupted as demonstrators gathered near the gates of a Frontier Corps compound. "I spoke to district officials who confirmed that the attackers were targeting the protesters," Afridi stated, emphasizing the need for accountability.

In the aftermath of the shooting, distraught families and community members blocked the Tank-South Waziristan Road, demanding immediate action against those responsible for the violence. The local government responded with promises of compensation, announcing Rs 10 million for the families of the deceased and Rs 2.5 million for each injured individual.

Major General Rao Imran Sartaj, Inspector General of Frontier Corps Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (North), visited the injured at the Frontier Corps Teaching Hospital, where he listened to their accounts of the attack. Many expressed gratitude for the medical care they received, but the atmosphere remained tense as the community grappled with the loss and fear of further violence.

The chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa expressed deep sorrow over the incident, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the region. As the community mourns, the call for justice grows louder, with residents demanding that the government take decisive action against the perpetrators of this tragic attack.

As tensions continue to rise in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by local communities in their fight against terrorism and violence.
