Jair Bolsonaro Leaves Intensive Care Following Complex Surgery
Sao Paulo, May 1 (AP) — Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has transitioned out of intensive care as he continues his recovery from a significant bowel surgery, his medical team announced on Thursday. The 68-year-old politician, who has faced a series of health challenges since being stabbed during a campaign rally in 2018, is now stable and has begun a liquid diet.
Bolsonaro underwent a grueling 12-hour surgery on April 13 at the DF Star Hospital in Brasilia, aimed at removing intestinal adhesions and reconstructing his abdominal wall. This procedure marked the sixth surgery related to the long-term effects of the attack, which has haunted his health since his presidency from 2019 to 2022.
Described by doctors as the “most complex” surgery he has faced since the stabbing, the operation required careful post-operative management. Bolsonaro was initially admitted to a hospital in Santa Cruz, Rio Grande do Norte, on April 11 due to severe abdominal pain before being transferred to a facility in Natal and later to Brasilia at his family’s request.
Despite his health issues, Bolsonaro had been preparing for a political tour across northeastern Brazil to promote his Liberal Party’s right-wing agenda, eyeing the upcoming presidential election. However, he is currently barred from running. The northeast region has traditionally supported President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, presenting a challenging landscape for Bolsonaro’s political ambitions.
In addition to his health struggles, Bolsonaro is expected to face trial in the coming months at Brazil’s Supreme Court for allegedly attempting to stage a coup following the riots led by his supporters in January 2023.
As he continues to recover, the political landscape in Brazil remains charged, with Bolsonaro’s future in both health and politics hanging in the balance.
