Over 2,000 delegates, including vice finance ministers from various countries, gathered in Gyeongju to participate in the first APEC Senior Official Meeting (SOM) and its associated committees.

The SOM plays a crucial role in discussing and deciding on major agendas before the APEC Summit and Ministerial Meeting. At this meeting, the South Korean government presented ‘AI cooperation’ and ‘response to demographic changes’ as key goals to be promoted during its tenure as APEC chair country. These topics were well-received by participating countries as timely issues that reflect the challenges facing the Asia-Pacific region.

Chairman Yoon emphasized the significance of addressing AI and population issues within APEC, noting that these topics had not been previously discussed within the organization. The proactive stance taken by South Korea in presenting these topics for consideration demonstrates its leadership in addressing global challenges.

Eduardo Pedroza, the secretary-general of APEC, expressed confidence in the preparations for the summit, including transportation arrangements. However, he mentioned that final decisions regarding leaders’ accommodations were still pending.
