Daughter of Sir David Amess calls refusal to hold inquiry into his murder ‘an absolute insult’

Date:

The tragic murder of Sir David Amess in 2021 sent shockwaves through the nation, leaving his family devastated and seeking answers. The recent decision by the government to reject a national inquiry into his murder has sparked outrage and disappointment, particularly from his daughter, Katie Amess. She has expressed her frustration, calling it an “absolute insult” and a “betrayal to our father’s memory.”

Katie Amess has described the void left in her life by her father’s death as unimaginable. She highlighted the authorities’ failure to protect him, stating that his death has been swept under the rug, overlooked and forgotten. In a passionate plea to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, she emphasized the need to keep her father’s memory alive and ensure that justice is served for his murder.

Sir David Amess was brutally stabbed to death by Ali Harbi Ali, an ISIS supporter, during a constituency surgery at a church hall in Leigh-on-Sea. The killer, who received a whole-life sentence, was known to have been radicalized by ISIS propaganda and had been referred to the anti-terror programme Prevent prior to the attack. A review into his murder revealed that he was released from the Prevent programme too quickly, with his case closed years before the tragic incident.

Katie Amess has taken legal action against Essex Police and the Home Office, expressing her dissatisfaction with the investigations conducted so far. She criticized the government for offering only “useless paper reviews” instead of a full, open, public inquiry into her father’s death. She questioned the value placed on her father’s life, demanding equal treatment and the truth that other families receive in similar circumstances.

The government’s refusal to initiate a public inquiry has further fueled the Amess family’s frustration. Security minister Dan Jarvis defended this decision, citing previous reviews that have taken place since the attack. Despite this, the family continues to seek answers and justice for Sir David’s untimely death.

As the Amess family continues to push for accountability and transparency, the government faces mounting pressure to reconsider its stance. The call for a comprehensive investigation into the events surrounding Sir David Amess’s murder remains unresolved, leaving his loved ones seeking closure and the assurance that similar tragedies will never happen again.

The emotional plea from Katie Amess and the ongoing battle for justice serve as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact of her father’s murder. The fight for truth and accountability continues, highlighting the need for a thorough examination of the failures that led to this senseless loss. Sir David Amess’s memory lives on through the dedication of his family to seek justice and prevent future tragedies.
