Gift Machinga chosen as bishop

Date:

The Africa Central Conference recently made a significant decision by electing the Rev. Gift Kudakwashe Machinga as a United Methodist bishop. This pivotal moment occurred on the 12th ballot during a gathering of delegates in Johannesburg. Machinga, a pastor from Zimbabwe, secured 41 out of 60 valid votes cast, surpassing the required threshold of 40 votes for election.

Upon his election, Machinga expressed gratitude towards his fellow candidates from Zimbabwe, namely the Rev. Forbes Matonga, the Rev. Lloyd Nyarota, and the Rev. Vienna Mutezo. He extended an invitation to the Zimbabwe Episcopal Area, urging clergy and laity to join him in elevating The United Methodist Church to new heights.

Machinga’s election marked the third bishop chosen by the central conference during this session. The Rev. Emmanuel Sinzohagera of Burundi and the Rev. Moisés Bernardo Jungo of Angola were also elected, signifying a significant moment for the church in Africa.

The Africa Central Conference is set to undergo a division into the East Africa and Southern Africa central conferences on March 16. The East Africa Central Conference will encompass countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda, along with Burundi, which recently reunited with The United Methodist Church. On the other hand, the Southern Africa Central Conference will include regions such as Angola, Botswana, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Machinga brings a wealth of experience to his new role as bishop, with 42 years of pastoral ministry under his belt. His previous roles include serving as a district superintendent, conference secretary, and chair of various boards and committees within the church. Additionally, he has been actively involved in ecumenical organizations and has held leadership positions in theological education.

In his candidacy for bishop, Machinga emphasized his commitment to guiding United Methodists through periods of change and addressing challenges within the denomination. He highlighted the importance of upholding Biblical teachings while extending ministry to all individuals, reflecting a balanced approach to issues of marriage and sexuality.

Machinga’s consecration as bishop is scheduled for March 16, marking a significant milestone in his journey of service to The United Methodist Church. As he steps into this new role, he will be tasked with overseeing the spiritual and temporal affairs of the church, appointing clergy, and navigating the evolving landscape of the denomination.

The election of Machinga as a United Methodist bishop underscores the church’s commitment to leadership development and representation from diverse regions. His appointment signifies a new chapter in the Africa Central Conference’s history and sets the stage for continued growth and impact within the denomination.
