Transforming Rural Communities with Smart Village Technology: A Case Study from Zambia
Zambia Launches First Smart Village Site in Collaboration with Huawei at MWC Barcelona 2025
The impact of technology on the world has reached far beyond urban cities, with digital technology now making its way to every corner of the world. In a groundbreaking move, Zambia’s Ministry of Science and Technology partnered with Huawei to launch its first smart village site in Muchila, Zambia, in July 2024. This initiative provided electricity and Internet access, enabling better education and healthcare for the local community.
At the MWC Barcelona 2025 event, the Ministry of Technology and Science of Zambia, in collaboration with Huawei, showcased Zambia’s smart village project at the government industry forum titled “Secured, Sovereign & Synergized Network – Cloud Strategy Accelerating National Digitalization.” This demonstration not only sets a standard for rural digitization in Africa but also marks a significant advancement for Huawei in promoting inclusive connectivity globally.
Felix C. Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science of Zambia, emphasized how the smart village project aligns with Zambia’s Vision 2030 and equips the next generation with digital skills needed for the fourth industrial revolution. He highlighted the project’s role in empowering communities, bridging inequalities, and creating a future where every Zambian can contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
The Smart Village Solution, implemented in rural areas, offers a cost-effective and easily deployable option for providing electricity and Internet connectivity. This solution, combined with RuralStar technology, enables extensive network coverage, transforming rural education and healthcare through digital classrooms and clinics. Villagers now have access to better education, improved medical standards, and enhanced livelihoods, connecting them to the rest of the world.
Li Junfeng (Wind), CEO of Global Public Sector at Huawei, emphasized the importance of digital transformation for governments and citizens’ well-being. He highlighted Huawei’s commitment to collaborating with international partners to drive sustainable digitalization and build a smarter future for all.
The launch of Zambia’s smart village site sets a precedent for similar initiatives worldwide, accelerating digital transformation in even the most remote societies. This model aims to uplift and empower communities, driving long-term, sustainable development and fostering a more interconnected world.
