Meeting between JD Vance and Vatican Officials: Concerns about Trump Administration’s Migrant Crackdown

Vatican Officials Express Concern Over Trump Administration’s Immigration Policies During Meeting with Vice President JD Vance

Vatican officials met with Vice President JD Vance at the Apostolic Palace in Rome to discuss their concerns about the Trump administration’s crackdown on migrants. The closed-door meetings with Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Foreign Minister Archbishop Paul Gallagher focused on a range of topics, including the treatment of migrants and prisoners, as well as international conflicts and humanitarian crises.

Vance, a Catholic convert since 2019, discussed his shared religious faith with Parolin and emphasized President Trump’s commitment to restoring world peace. The Vatican expressed hope for “serene collaboration” with the U.S. Church despite differences in opinion on immigration policies.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of Pope Francis’ recent criticism of the administration’s deportation agenda, warning that it could deprive migrants of their dignity. While Vance did not meet with the Pope, who is recovering from pneumonia, the papal position on immigration was a significant factor in the discussions.

The divide between Rome and Washington on immigration issues has deepened in recent months, with Vance accusing the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops of prioritizing federal grant money over humanitarian concerns. The bishops defended their work and mission, emphasizing the importance of caring for vulnerable populations.

Despite the differences in opinion, the meeting also included lighter moments, such as Vance’s family receiving a private tour of the Sistine Chapel and visiting Rome’s botanic garden. The family also attended Good Friday services at St. Peter’s Basilica and is scheduled to attend Easter morning Mass in St. Peter’s Square.

Overall, the discussions between Vatican officials and Vice President Vance highlighted the ongoing tensions and differing perspectives on immigration policies, while also emphasizing the importance of dialogue and collaboration between the two entities.
