Superman Review: A Flop or a Frustration? James Gunn’s Lackluster Reboot Delivers Both | Movies

Date:

Superman: A New Dawn or Just Another Dusk?

The Weight of Expectations

In the ever-evolving landscape of superhero cinema, the latest Superman film finds itself at a crossroads, grappling with the dual challenges of franchise fatigue and the soullessness often associated with AI-generated narratives. Directed by James Gunn, known for his successful work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, this reboot was anticipated as a potential revival for the iconic Man of Steel. After the mixed reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the convoluted Justice League, fans hoped for a fresh take that would reignite the excitement surrounding Superman.

A Cluttered Backstory

However, from the outset, this new iteration of Superman feels burdened by a convoluted backstory that detracts from the essence of the character. Instead of a straightforward origin story that captures the imagination—like the classic tale of Superman arriving from Krypton—viewers are met with a series of intertitles that attempt to explain a complex narrative. This approach not only muddles the storytelling but also risks alienating audiences who crave the simplicity and clarity that made superhero tales so compelling in the first place.

The Hero’s Dilemma

In this film, Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, finds himself embroiled in a fictional conflict between two made-up nations: Boravia and Jarhanpur. The choice to set the story in a fictional context may be an attempt to avoid real-world political implications, but it ultimately leaves the narrative feeling hollow. Superman’s involvement in this war raises questions about his motivations and the stakes involved, leading to a lack of emotional investment from the audience.

A Lackluster Villain

The film introduces Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, who seems to be orchestrating events from the shadows. Yet, rather than presenting a formidable adversary, Luthor’s character feels underdeveloped and lacks the gravitas that fans expect from Superman’s arch-nemesis. The film’s reliance on CGI and action sequences, culminating in yet another city-destroying showdown, further detracts from the character-driven storytelling that could have elevated the narrative.

Relationship Struggles

On the personal front, Clark Kent’s relationship with Lois Lane, portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan, adds another layer of complexity. However, the dynamic feels more like a rehash of familiar tropes than a fresh exploration of their bond. Brosnahan’s performance, while commendable, often echoes the quirks of Courteney Cox’s Monica Geller from Friends, which may unintentionally draw attention away from the gravity of their situation.

The Weight of Legacy

As the film progresses, Superman faces a crisis of confidence, exacerbated by revelations about his origins and the intentions of his parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van. This internal struggle, while potentially rich in thematic depth, feels overshadowed by the film’s reliance on spectacle rather than substance. The narrative ultimately raises the question: what is the purpose of a film that seems trapped in a cycle of generic storytelling, unable to break free from the conventions that have come to define the superhero genre?

The CGI Conundrum

One of the most glaring issues with this new Superman film is its over-reliance on CGI. The climactic battles, while visually impressive, lack the emotional weight that could make them resonate with audiences. The thrill of witnessing a superhero in action has diminished, as viewers have become accustomed to the same formulaic destruction and chaos that has permeated the genre. The film’s climax, featuring yet another apocalyptic showdown, feels more like a chore than an exhilarating spectacle.

Release Information

For those eager to see how this new chapter unfolds, Superman is set to be released on July 10 in Australia and July 11 in the UK and the US. As fans prepare to revisit the world of Superman, they are left to ponder whether this reboot will breathe new life into the franchise or simply add to the growing list of missed opportunities in superhero cinema.
