Demonstrators Clash with Bangladesh Adviser in London: Eggs Thrown at High Commission Vehicles During Protest
Tensions Rise as Bangladesh Adviser Faces Protests in London
Dhaka, Bangladesh — September 14, 2023: In a dramatic turn of events, Mahfuz Alam, the Information and Broadcasting Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, found himself at the center of protests in London. As he exited a program at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) commemorating the first anniversary of Bangladesh’s July uprising, demonstrators hurled eggs at vehicles associated with the Bangladesh High Commission.
The Metropolitan Police swiftly intervened, ensuring that Alam was not present in the affected vehicles. The High Commission confirmed that police maintained constant communication and provided "full security" for the Adviser during his engagements.
This incident follows a similar protest in New York just weeks prior, where Alam was targeted by demonstrators who threw eggs and bottles during an event at the Bangladesh Consulate General. The mission has since reached out to local authorities, including the State Department, seeking action against the aggressors.
Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, condemned the harassment, stating, "This pattern of conduct has no place in any democracy that values argument over aggression." He emphasized that "violence is not protest; intimidation is not free speech," echoing sentiments shared after the New York incident.
In a related development, Bangladeshi news outlet Prothom Alo reported significant electoral victories for candidates backed by the Islami Chhatra Shibir, a student organization, in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. Shibir leader Abu Shadik Kayem won the Vice President post with a staggering 14,042 votes, far surpassing his nearest rival.
As tensions mount both domestically and internationally, the interim government faces increasing scrutiny and challenges to its authority. The recent protests highlight a growing discontent among certain factions, raising questions about the future political landscape in Bangladesh.
The situation remains fluid, with both the government and opposition groups poised for further developments in the coming days.
