Concerns Rise Over H-1B Visa Fee Hike Amid Talent Shortage: Insights from Dhruva Jaishankar

New York, September 24 (ANI) — In a significant development, Dhruva Jaishankar, Executive Director of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) America, has raised alarms regarding the recent hike in H-1B visa fees, which he claims could exacerbate the existing talent shortage faced by both Indian and U.S.-based companies.

Speaking to ANI, Jaishankar emphasized the challenges posed by evolving U.S. immigration policies, particularly under the Trump administration. He noted that the increase in fees—from approximately $1,500 to a staggering $100,000 for new H-1B applications—could hinder companies’ ability to secure skilled workers.

"Industry has raised concerns about whether it can obtain sufficient talent for jobs, affecting both India-based multinational corporations and U.S. firms," Jaishankar stated. He acknowledged that immigration policies are sovereign matters, but underscored the importance of balancing national interests with economic realities.

The recent proclamation signed by President Trump mandates that all new H-1B visa petitions filed after September 21 must include the new fee. Current visa holders and petitions submitted before this date will remain unaffected, but the implications for future applications are significant.

Jaishankar also addressed the broader context of U.S.-India relations, referencing a dip in U.S. favorability in India following Operation Sindoor. He cautioned against potential long-term restrictions that could arise from these immigration policies, urging policymakers to consider the long-term impacts beyond immediate political priorities.

Additionally, Jaishankar criticized the 50% tariffs imposed on Indian imports, particularly the additional 25% tariff related to India’s purchase of Russian oil. He described these tariffs as "unusually high" and detrimental to bilateral trade.

Despite these challenges, Jaishankar expressed optimism about the evolving dynamics between the two nations, noting a shift from a "frigid relationship" to a more constructive dialogue.

As the global landscape continues to shift amid economic tensions, the implications of the H-1B visa fee hike and trade tariffs will be closely monitored by industry leaders and policymakers alike.
