Maple Leaf’s Groundbreaking Autonomous Driving Demonstration in Oman

Maple Leaf has officially marked its foray into the realm of autonomous driving in Oman with a groundbreaking demonstration at Salalah International Airport. This event bolsters the nation’s commitment to smart, electric, and sustainable mobility solutions, as the country navigates its vision for future transportation. The demonstration was conducted collaboratively with Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) and Oman Airports.


A Milestone Event at Salalah International Airport

At the forefront of this significant demonstration was Liang Yi, the founder and Chairman of Maple Leaf, alongside His Excellency Eng. Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali, the Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology. Their participation—along with executives from Oman Airports—saw the testing of a Maple Leaf autonomous shuttle, which underwent rigorous on-site validation procedures.

The primary focus of this trial was to assess the vehicle’s capability to operate safely and effectively in a real-world environment. Essential aspects that were evaluated included:

  • Sensing and Real-Time Monitoring: Ensuring the vehicle could accurately perceive and react to its surroundings.
  • Route Recognition and Navigation: The ability of the shuttle to determine and stick to its designated route.
  • Environmental Perception: How well the vehicle senses and interprets various environmental factors.
  • Obstacle Detection and Handling: Identifying obstacles in its path and navigating around them seamlessly.
  • Operational Stability and Dispatch Efficiency: Ensuring smooth and efficient operations throughout its driving cycle.

The success of this demonstration signifies an early operational milestone for entering Chinese autonomous-driving technology in the Middle East.


Rapid Implementation: The “China Speed” Advantage

Minister Al Maawali spoke highly of Maple Leaf’s technical prowess and impressive speed in execution, coining the term “China speed” to describe the rapid deployment process. This swiftness was evident as the company transitioned from local trials to transporting and testing their vehicle in Oman in a short time frame.

This efficiency is indicative of the growing capabilities in autonomous technology and its implementation across international borders.


Expanding Horizons: New Cooperation Agreements

In conjunction with the successful demonstration, a comprehensive cooperation agreement was signed between Maple Leaf and MTCIT. This momentous ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Bater, the Executive Vice Governor of Hainan Province, and Khamis bin Mohammed Al-Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport at MTCIT. The signing was further supported by representatives from Hainan provincial authorities and the Chinese Embassy in Oman, underscoring the collaborative spirit of this initiative.

The agreement paves the way for expansive cooperation beyond just the deployment of autonomous vehicles. Oman has expressed interest in involving Maple Leaf in smart-city programs, airport electrification initiatives, and broader energy-transition projects. This strategic partnership aligns well with Oman’s aspirations to modernize its transportation landscape.


Ambitious Goals for Last-Mile Transportation

Oman’s government has set ambitious objectives for Maple Leaf, envisioning the establishment of last-mile passenger and logistics networks within the cities of Muscat and Salalah in just one year. Additionally, MTCIT has articulated a detailed timetable for the commercial operation of autonomous vehicles, anticipated to roll out as early as the third quarter of 2027.

If all goes according to plan, Maple Leaf is poised to deploy between 30,000 and 50,000 autonomous shuttles and driverless logistics vehicles across Oman over the next five years. This expansive initiative is expected to significantly transform the transportation sector in the region, enhancing operational efficiencies and contributing to sustainable urban development.


This project represents not only a technological advancement for Oman but also a promising collaboration that can redefine urban mobility in the Middle East. The collective efforts of Maple Leaf and local authorities may just be the catalyst needed for a broader shift towards sustainable transportation solutions.
