Latest on Ukraine-Russia conflict: US stops sharing intelligence with Kyiv, Starmer trusts Trump as a reliable ally

Date:

In a recent development, the United States has suspended its intelligence-sharing with Ukraine, a move that has cut off a crucial source of information that has helped Ukraine target Russian invaders. This decision comes as President Donald Trump has put military aid to Ukraine on hold, stating that a review of all aspects of the relationship between the two countries is underway. National security adviser Mike Waltz mentioned that this step back is part of broader negotiations between Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to potentially negotiate a peace deal with Russia. However, there are indications that intelligence sharing could resume soon, as positive talks between Washington and Kyiv have been reported.

During a recent Prime Minister’s Questions session, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer addressed reports that the US had barred the UK from sharing intelligence with Ukraine. Starmer emphasized the importance of collaboration between the US, the UK, Europe, and Ukraine, highlighting the need for unity without having to choose between the US and Europe.

In response to the suspension of intelligence sharing, President Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, confirmed that he and US national security adviser Mike Waltz have scheduled a meeting of officials in the near future. This indicates ongoing efforts to maintain communication and cooperation between the two countries despite the temporary halt in intelligence sharing.

Furthermore, President Zelensky is set to meet with EU leaders, with whom he has reported positive movement in discussions. Zelensky expressed hope for the resumption of talks regarding Ukraine’s potential EU membership, emphasizing the importance of support from European partners. He has been actively engaging with various European leaders to garner support and prepare plans for peace initiatives.

Amidst these diplomatic efforts, pro-Ukraine protesters have gathered outside the US embassy in London, demonstrating their support for Ukraine and calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops. The demonstration, organized by the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign, reflects the growing international concern and solidarity with Ukraine in the face of escalating tensions.

Overall, the situation underscores the complex diplomatic landscape surrounding Ukraine, with various countries and leaders engaging in negotiations, discussions, and demonstrations to address the ongoing conflict and seek peaceful resolutions. The evolving dynamics between the US, Ukraine, and European partners highlight the importance of international cooperation and dialogue in navigating challenging geopolitical circumstances.
